One of the joys of motherhood, is knowing that you are very important to your baby, and that you are the best source of love and nourishment for your baby. That's just one of the reasons that I love nursing! Where does little Jr. go when he's hungry? Where does he feel safe, happy and at rest? It's in mommy's arms! He knows that that's where he goes to feel better at anytime! After all, it was in mommy that he grew for 9 months. This very special bond is truly an honor and privilege for mama's to have!
I am certainly an advocate of mother's milk over formula, but I won't fault a mother if she chooses otherwise. She knows her reasons. I'm thankful that there is such a choice as formula, so that if a mother couldn't nurse, than the baby's needs can be met. Having said that, though, you will find that this website will strongly encourage nursing, and for good reason! Let's talk about the benefits of nursing.
Helpful Nursing Tools
Today is a good day for being a nursing mom. There are many helpful support groups, books and even lactation consultants. The birthing wing of your hospital may even have a regular consultant on staff to help you. Some or all of the nurses may even be trained to guide you as you're getting started. You and baby are learning together. I personally found the advice of these, my mom and a book or two to be helpful. However, once I got the information I needed, I really didn't want the hospital consultant there anymore: I simply needed privacy with my baby. No pressure.
The Nursing Mother's Companion, by Kathleen Huggins, is an excellent book for the new mom in preparing for nursing. (I read from this and The Husband Coached Childbirth book while I was waiting for my little one to arrive...I recommend both books. Click here to read more about the childbirth book.)
