So, the holidays are here. Thanksgiving and Christmas have always been very special to me --- right along with my birthday! Maybe even to a fault, because I tend to set myself up for disappointment sometimes. I, like many of you too, I’m sure, tend to have high expectations and a great build-up to a special day that ends up being a letdown sometimes. Maybe too, I’ve had many lovely holidays so that I find myself looking for another great time the next year. But I think the biggest reason for the letdown is that we, as a society, really DO build up the holiday season like crazy. I mean, seriously: We have songs, stories, big plans and more all around a certain day or season. We really do get jazzed up about everything, and forget exactly what the holidays are all about.

I know many make a big deal about not missing the reason for the season at Christmas time, and they are correct. But today, I’d like to check my thoughts and motives over Thanksgiving day. It’s a day that we have a feast, maybe family or friends over, watch a football game, then sleep, then wake up and eat more. All of that is good and fun, but without taking the time to REALLY think of our blessings and thank God for them, we have missed the point of this special day! We are left then, with making an effort to have fun and good feelings on that day, but probably not getting to that goal so well. Why? We forgot that in stopping to be thankful and/or to set our minds to serve others, we feel happiest and most blessed!

A Blessed Night Still

I nursed you in the night,

Then I nursed you yet again.

Now you’re sleeping in your bed;

But I’ve been up since who-knows-when!

But really, I don’t mind this.

No, I don’t mind one bit.

For all my life I wanted a baby,

And Baby Boy, you’re it!

Tonight I held you longer,

Just to look at you.

As you slept in my arms

Your sweetness did ensue.

There was your beautiful profile:

something of your daddy and me.

It filled my heart with

Happiness, gratitude and glee!

So, you can take my sleep again

Tomorrow if you will.

Another night of you in my arms

Is another blessed night still.
Go on a picnic!

Stop and smell the roses. Ahhh....
Oh, wait, it's cold...and maybe the roses are gone by now, depending on where you live...

Okay, so it's a little cold this time of the year, but not too cold to bundle up and take a walk! Or play outside! Fresh air is good for you and your children!

Here's a little encouragement to take time with your children today. Enjoy all the moments you can get...the moments are fleeting and the children up so fast!

My life as a mom continues to develop as my baby develops!  It's great fun to see my little one growing up. I feel like he is a baby and a little boy all-at-the-same-time.  I love him so much, and I always hope that he will think I am a good mama when he grows up old enough, hopefully, to think about it. A mother's love is a beautiful thing.

It's a beautiful thing to watch a father's love too.  As I watch my husband enjoying his son, and having fun father-son times of listening to music together or hanging out in daddy's office while daddy works, etc., my heart is blessed!

Not every child has a mom and a dad that are near. Not every parent gets to raise their child to adulthood. Let's not take these moments for granted!  My own father died very young which only goes to show that we don't know what the next moment may hold.  Let's hold our children closer. They are gifts to be treasured above the "stuff" that we strive to acquire. Enjoy your children every moment you can.
